We're back at Senior's Week at Federation Square in October!

The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing will once again host a stall along the banks of the Yarra at the 'Celebration Day' event as part of Seniors Week at Federation Square on Sunday 5th October 2014.

We will be distributing information about aged care in Australia in over 18 different languages. Joining us will be our colleagues from Chinese Community Social Services, Macedonian Community Welfare Association and Victorian Arabic Social Services.

If you have a client, friend or family member who may need aged care information in another language, please let them know about our stall! We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Count Us In – Shaping Inclusive Communities Expo in Ballarat

Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council in partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia Vic invite you to the free Community Expo “Count Us In – Shaping Inclusive Communities” to celebrate Dementia Awareness Month.

The Expo will showcase healthy and active ageing in culturally inclusive and dementia-friendly communities.

The day will be filled with a range of activities including guest speakers, cooking demonstrations, a 'Your Brain Matters' information session, Tai Chi, health checks, free lunch and entertainment.

Count Us In - Shaping Inclusive Communities will be held on Thursday 25th September at GPLACE - 102 English Street, Golden Point 3350 from 10am-2pm.

Invitation to Greek Cultural Briefing in Ballarat

The Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council and Australian Greek Welfare Society will present a Greek cultural briefing in Ballarat on Monday 29th September 2014.

This cultural briefing, facilitated by Adonis Maglis from the Australian Greek Welfare Society aims to raise cultural awareness of aged and health care workers in delivering services to people from Greek backgrounds.

Participants will be informed about local demographics, customs, beliefs, health issues, attitudes towards older people and aged care, barriers in accessing services and tips on working effectively with clients from Greek backgrounds.

PASCOP Meaningful Ageing Seminar Series

PASCOP (Pastoral & Spiritual Care of Older People) in association with Baptcare are pleased to announce the next event in the Meaningful Ageing Seminar Series - 'Forgetting memory loss & remembering each other – you, me and dementia'.

This event will provide an opportunity to hear speakers present innovative research and practice experiences in relation to pastoral and spiritual care of older people, as well as participate in the panel discussion/Q&A.

The Seminar will be held on Monday 6th October at 9:30-12:30pm at The Auditorium, 800 Bourke Street Docklands (NAB Building)

Working Together Across Generations

An intergenerational forum - Working Together Across Generations - will be held at Deakin Edge, Federation Square on Tuesday 7th October 2014.

The forum will be chaired by the Commissioner for Senior Victorians on behalf of the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Senior Victorians (MACSV). Part of the MACSV's role is to provide advice to government regarding opportunities for intergerational collaboration.

There will be a panel and audience discussion on what each generation can learn from each other and to identify what is important to our communities when it comes to understanding and valuing what each has to offer.

Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm

Cultural Diversity in Ageing Excellence Award winners featured in FECCA-NCAN News

The latest FECCA NCAN-News features two of the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing Excellence Award winners, Angela Ng, Villa Maria (White Road Activity and Respite) and Mr Urfi Mirza from Southern Cross Care.

The September Issue, dedicated to raising awareness about dementia explores how dementia care within culturally and linguistically diverse communities featured prominently in the work of the award winners.

Spirituality in Aged Care Professional Development Program

Spiritual Health Victoria (formerly Healthcare Chaplaincy Council of Victoria Inc.) has developed a new education resource for aged care - the Spirituality in Aged Care Professional Development Program.

This program is an innovative education resource designed to assist aged care providers to better understand what is meant by spirituality and spiritual care, and to identify and respond to the spiritual needs of ageing residents and clients as part of their everyday practice.

The Spirituality in Aged Care Program is suitable for all aged care staff and volunteers and can be facilitated by a spiritual care professional from your facility or a Spiritual Health Victoria accredited facilitator.

Diverse Australian Communities encouraged to 'Sing for Spring'!

Creativity Australia is encouraging Australians to Sing for Spring - a national video competition to get diverse Australian communities singing together for a great cause!

The organisers don’t care if you’ve never sung before - they want to have a bit of fun and get families, schools, workplaces and community groups together to sing a song, video it and enter it online.

The best videos (including Best Non-English Sing, Most Multicultural Entry etc) will be shown on the big screen at Federation Square and Melbourne Town Hall concerts in October.

Entry is by donation of about $10 per participant. Donations raised will support people in need through Creativity Australia’s With One Voice program (participants aged 9-90, from 40+ nationalities),

New Report: Palliative Care and Māori from a Health Literacy Perspective

The Ministry of Health New Zealand has released a a new report Palliative Care and Māori from a Health Literacy Perspective which explores Maori health literacy and communication in palliative care and is now available online.

There is a limited amount of New Zealand research into the Māori experience of palliative care and issues of access. The report focuses on gaining a better understanding of ways to increase access to, and the quality of, palliative care services by strengthening health literacy.

The report also provides recommendations for actions to enhance Māori health literacy and access to palliative care.

DonateLife: Organ Donation Information in 18 Languages

DonateLife has produced a new suite of resources in 18 languages to help culturally and linguistically diverse communities with family discussion and decision-making about organ and tissue donation.

The new translated resources include the standard DonateLife brochure, which provides information on facts, myths and help with making donation decisions as well as the registration form for the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR).

In addition materials to support donor families after a loved one has donated have also been translated.  The ‘Understanding Death and Donation’ booklet assists with understanding the donation process and support their decision-making and the ‘In Reflection’ booklet provides information for donor families in dealing with the grieving process.

Interactive map shows where Australia's immigrants were born

SBS have developed an interactive map revealing the top three birthplaces for immigrants in suburbs and towns across Australia.

The map was created using the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 Census.

Discussing Life, Death and Dreams in Palliaitve Care

Photographer Pippa Wischer asked forty people who are receiving palliative care questions about life, dreams and dying - photographing them while they answered these intimate and complex questions, The Dreamers reveals answers to the deeper questions of life by those living until they die.

The Dreamers: Life Death and Dreams was published in 2014 by Palliative Care Victoria.
